چکیده

Vegetation composition is fuzzy by its very nature. Classification approaches, despite their robustness, will always lead to a degradation of the original information (Palmer et al. 2002). Palmer (2007) explicitly states that: ‘we have no comprehensive theory governing the geometry of environmental variation. Some environmental gradients vary smoothly and linearly [...]. Other gradients may be more spatially unpredictable.’ Such unpredictability is related to the uncertainty of representing nature using pre-defined deterministic laws. In this case, uncertainty is particular and important information that deserves to be maintained and spatially represented, instead of being abruptly cut off. Thomas J. Duff and colleagues (Duff et al. 2014) attempt to describe vegetation classes relying on fuzzy set theory, leading to what I call ‘fuzzy species distribution models’, to represent their continuous variation over space. For the sake of clarity, mathematically speaking, let U denote a universe of entities u; hence, the fuzzy set F is

On the Local Coexistence of Species in Plant Communities

Coexistence of many competitive species is very common in natural plant communities. For example, almost all forests and grasslands consist of various species. Extremely high biodiversity is seen in tropical rain forests. Grassland communities also often consist of many species. In plant communities, spatially competitive species of plants coexist in a mosaic pattern. Communities with a single ...

Fitting of Species Frequency Distribution Models in Woody Societies in Rangelands of Gouradarah, Gechigiran Ahar

One of the important goals of natural resource management is to conserve plant diversity in the ecosystem so that sites are more productive and more ecologically stable at the various situations. Different diversity indices have been presented to study the species status of natural ecosystems. One of these indicators is the use of empirical distribution models that each of these models ind...

An Application of Fuzzy TOPSIS Method for Plant Selection in Rangeland Improvement (Case Study: Boroujerd Rangeland, Lorestan Province, Iran)

Species selection based on a new method such as a fuzzy method is one of the most important stages in the successful plantation management planning as choosing a suitable species for the site can be the key to success. This paper is based on a fuzzy extension of the Technique or Order Preference which is similar to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method. The purpose of this paper is to develop fuzzy TO...
